More than 200 overseas-based residents will be returning ‘home’ to celebrate with their villagers in the second reunion for the Swetes community starting on Saturday, 17 July, 2010 and ending on Saturday, 24 July, 2010.
The events begin with Meet-and-Greet at the V C Bird Airport on Saturday (July 17) when members of the organising committee, led by the President, Morrison Burton, will hold a reception for those flying from England, the United States, Canada, the US Virgin Islands and St Maarten.
The ‘returnees’ and the villagers will then converge at the Swetes clinic for the Opening Ceremony where Burton will present a plaque nurse Iotha Roberts in honour of the late Dr Charles Locker, who practised there in the 1970s.
Govenor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack and Parliamentary Representative Chester Hughes are expected to attend the function.
On Sunday (July 18), the community will fellowship at the open-air Church Service as the Swetes Playing Field where Reverend Danny Ambrose, the older brother of former West Indies cricket legend, Curtly Ambrose, will be among celebrants.
A picnic will take place at Ffryes Bay on Monday (July 19).
On Tuesday (July 20), there will be a Walk-a-Thon in the morning followed by a Health Fair at the clinic where a lecturer from the United States and Dr Rodney Williams will speak to the gathering on issues such HIV-AIDS and hypertension. In the evening there will be a Karaoke.
Sports and recreation events will be staged on Wednesday (July 21) including track and field and a possible 20/20 cricket match followed by an Ole Time-Something village night on the same day.
A visit to the sister Island, Barbuda, or circumnavigate around Antigua is tentatively planned for Thursday (July 22).
On Friday (July 23), a Banquet will be hosted at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa where several individuals and sponsors will be recognised. Ambrose and the Spirited Band will also perform.
Homage will be shown to more than 100 senior citizens at a Luncheon at the Catamaran Hotel in Falmouth where the oldest man and woman will receive an award each on July 24.
A Coral Ark cruise will climax the activities on that day.
Apart from Ambrose, the Swetes community has also produced former West Indies wicket-keeper batsman Ridely Jacobs and first-class batsman, Enoch Lewis among others.
