St Clair Court Phase 1 completed.

July 5th, 2009 …. Minister of Agriculture Lands, Housing & The Environment Hilson Baptiste has given his blessing to another residential development, completing phase 1 of ten townhouses/condominiums at St Clair Court that was put on the market.

Saturday afternoon, the developer, GEOTECH Company Limited opened the properties for viewing to the general public.

Individuals from the banking industry were on site guiding prospective buyers on how to secure financing for the townhouses.

Turtle nesting season

June 24, 2009 … Chief Fisheries Officer, Cheryl Appleton is notifying the public that turtle nesting season has begun and monitoring is taking place at various sites.

Appleton said, “During this time of year it is usual to see females nesting on our beaches as well as hatchlings emerging from their nests. The general public is reminded that it is against the law to have in your possession any turtle during the closed season.”

Baptiste Calls For Action

Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing & The Environment Hilson Baptiste has issued a call for residents to take a more proactive approach in protecting the eco-system.

The minister was speaking at a tree planting ceremony held at the Mount St Johns Medical Centre, on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day, with a focus on Invasive Alien Species.

May 21, 2009 … The fishing village of Barbuda is a step closer to enjoying the benefits of the construction of an Artisanal Fisheries Facilities through the aid of the government of Japan.

A signing ceremony for the exchange of notes in preparation for the development of the fisheries infrastructure took place between the Government Of Antigua & Barbuda and Japan, Thursday Morning at the Ministry of Agriculture, conference room.

International Biodiversity Day in Antigua and Barbuda

May 21, 2009…. To mark International Day of Biological Diversity being celebrated, Friday May 22, 2009, the Environment Division will hold a tree planting exercise at the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre.

Twelve trees are earmarked for planting. Honorable Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, the Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing and Environment Hilson Baptiste and Minister of State within the Ministry of Agriculture Chanlah Codrington are among the dignitaries to plant a tree.

The aim of the exercise is to enhance our local biodiversity.

Wild Cotton Destruction

May 20th, 2009… The Plant Protection Unit (PPU) has put an eradication plan in place for the destruction of the wild cotton and is seeking the assistance of residents to report their locations.

The call from the Plant Protection Unit came amidst worries that the wild cotton attracts a dominant pest-Pink Bollworm scientifically called Pectinophora gossypiell, which reduces the yield and quality of the Sea Island cotton.
