Baiting for the Giant African Snail begins end of February 2012

St. John’s- Antigua February 23, 2012: Effective February 27, 2012 the Plant Protection Unit as part of its eradication programme for the Giant African Snail, will be carrying out a 3-4 week baiting exercise.

Owners of livestock within the controlled areas are therefore advised of the pending application of the snail baits and are urged to take the necessary steps in the exclusion of their animals from the treated areas.

Students Encouraged To Choose Career Path In Environment in Antigua and Barbuda

23 February 2012 St. Johns, Antigua: The platform was set for students to explore careers in the field of environment, exchange ideas with professionals, retrieve information on summer internship and possible projects during the second annual careers day, held Thursday at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre.

Organized as part of the ongoing Environment Cadet Program students representing approximately four (4) schools were encouraged to consider careers in the field of environment.

This year, the event was held under the theme “Green Opportunities.”

Ministry of Agriculture, IICA Collaborate To Increase Small Ruminant Production

wo representatives from the Inter –American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) are on island, conducting an assessment as part of a previous agreement to assist the ministry of Agriculture improve the genetics of small ruminants.

Dr. Manuel David Sanchez Hermosillo, Representative for Dominican Republic and Ms. Una May Gordon Representative for Eastern Caribbean are currently conducting an assessment to derive ways in which Antigua & Barbuda could develop specific proposals to increase the production of sheep and goats.

Ministry of Agriculture Plans Integrated Pest Management Workshop For Producers

In an effort to reduce the level of Pesticide dependency and intensity which has the potential to negatively affect our biodiversity and consumers’ confidence in the quality of food, the Agricultural Extension Services Division will be holding an Integrated Pest Management (IPM), workshop for agricultural producers.

The workshop set for 16th November 2011 at the Fisheries Complex Point Wharf, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., is the first set in a series to offer a holistic solution to Agricultural Producers.

Countries make final adjustments to declaration that will promote innovation in the region’s agricultural sector
