Streetlighting project begins

The street lighting project is running smoothly, according to the communications department within the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA). “To date, the project has been running according to schedule and the cables and foundation for the street lights have been laid in many areas,” said Corporate Communications Officer, Cathrona Samuel. Last December, APUA General Manager, Esworth Martin, along with representatives from the governments of Antigua & Barbuda and China, signed the final construction agreement, signaling the start of the installation of hundreds of street lights.

Engineer Ruvan Barnarde from the Electricity Division and Glenroy George of the Telephone Department are working along with the Chinese construction team. Samuel explained, “Mr George has been on hand on a daily basis ensuring that where work is done on or in the vicinity of private property, residents are informed and assured that no damage will be incurred on their premises.” At present, the team has erected bases for street lights from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium to Parham, Cassada Gardens to Woods Centre, and Valley Road to Five Islands.
