(St. John’s Antigua, January 14, 2010), The Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture is pleased to announce that it is throwing its full support behind the First Regional Day/Night 4-Day Cricket Tournament, slated to be held from January 15-18, 2010.
During a press launch on Tuesday at the host venue, the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium, the Hon. Minister of Tourism John Maginley took the opportunity to express his elation that first class cricket has returned to Antigua. “In the past, cricket has brought much recognition to Antigua and thousands to our shores at its former venue the Antigua Recreation Grounds, not to mention historical record breaking moments.” He continued, “We regret the mishap that took place here at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, however, now we can boast that WE ARE READY and we pledge to do continuous work on this facility to keep it at world class standards.”
Minister Maginley underscored his point that it is critical for the country to be back in the media spotlight on positive terms also stating that the country is once again making history with the staging of the first ever 1st class day/night games to be played this weekend. ‘
The tourism minister, a sports aficionado himself, made a commitment on behalf of his ministry to ensure that the event is a successful one.
“I am committing the resources of the Ministry of Tourism to aid in whatever way possible in an effort to ensure that the series is a success,” the Minister stated
He continued, “I am taking this opportunity to encourage all nationals to come out and enjoy party cricket with Chicky and the crew, have clean fun and bring along the entire family!”
As the official launch to the event Minister Maginley was given the opportunity to bat the first “pink” ball to be used during the weekend games.
