The St John (Ambulance) Association under which the St John Hospice falls, was recently awarded the Gweneth O'Reilly Ward at the old Holberton Hospital by the Government of Antigua & Barbuda to be used as a Hospice facility.
After lying vacant for two years the termites have taken up residence and the true extent of the damage will be found out as we go into Phase I of the renovation project. Phase I will entail removing all termite damaged doors, windows, frame work and beams then securing the building with repositioned and new windows. This initial work is being funded by the grant from the Gosling Foundation in the UK recently awarded through Dame Louise Lake-Tack, and other small donations.
The project will be overseen by project manager David Crump who is donating his time to the cause.
St John Hospice will be actively seeking additional funding and donations in order to complete the renovation of a 10 bed Hospice and hope to open its doors in January 2011.
St John Hospice has been providing home palliative care to the terminally ill and their families for over five years and it is time to take the organization to the next level which is to provide a Hospice facilitiy. Home care will still be offered for those wishing to remain at home and the thrift shop "Fashion Encore" on Bishopgate will remain the funding vehicle for this venture.
