Official slogan for Antigua'a Carnival 2010 announced

The Carnival Development Committee- CDC is pleased to announce the official slogan for Antigua’s Carnival 2010. This year’s slogan is “Bring Your Family, Tell A Friend, Antigua’s Carnival 2010”.

This slogan was used at the 2009 World Travel Market Trade Show in the United Kingdom. It formed part of the branding campaign for the 2010 Carnival festivities.

CDC Chairman Mr. Vaughn Walter stated that it is his vision that this slogan will solely capture the creativity, cultural artform and festive attitude of all patrons, participants, residents and visitors to our shores.

Black History Month - Week of Activities

Issues that get to the heart of our image and identity as Caribbean people of African descent will be explored, debated, showcased, and celebrated this Black History Month. A group of individuals and institutions have come together to put together a full programme – including radio discussions, a lecture, a visual arts exhibition and creative arts showcase, and more. The community is being encouraged to get involved.

Wadadli Youth Pen Prize

Black History Month is here and the February 5th Wadadli Youth Pen Prize deadline isn’t far behind. Meanwhile, organizers report success courting several prospective prize donors, with more to come.

Trophy Collection

The National Festivals Office is making a special appeal to all outstanding recipients of trophies from Carnival 2009 to come in to the office and collect their trophies. The deadline date for collection is Friday February 12, 2010.

The office is located on the 1st Floor of Pigott’s Mall, Market and Redcliffe Streets. Office hours are Mondays to Thursdays 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and Fridays 8:00 am to 3:00pm.

2010 Wadadli Youth Pen Prize competition

The Wadadli Youth Pen Prize writing competition returns with a Black History Month challenge. With an expanded age range, a visual arts component, and the intriguing Black and Beautiful theme, organizers are hoping to attract even more entries than the competition’s initial 2004 to 2006 run.

Nation remembers VC Bird’s legacy on National Heroes Day

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The people of Antigua and Barbuda are Wednesday celebrating the lives and accomplishments of the country’s national heroes as the twin-island state marks National Heroes Day.

The occasion has taken on added significance as the day also marks the centenary of the birth of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, the country’s first premier and prime minister, who is fondly remembered as the father of the nation.

Sir Vere who was declared a National Hero in 1994, the year that he stepped away from active politics, died in 1999.
